Inspiration
Canopy was started in March 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic reached the U.S. and Canopy founder and CEO Joe Rosenberg learned that in addition to a global shortage of N95 respirators, users loathe the half-century-old product design.
Joe moved quickly and brought together entrepreneurs, material scientists, biomedical engineers, industrial designers, clinicians, hospital administrators, and former FDA officials who began quietly working to develop and commercialize Canopy. The team interviewed dozens of healthcare workers and hospital administrators, and with close communication and testing with professionals in the field, Canopy seeks to push the industry forward.
Design Goals
Reusable & Sustainable
Comfortable on the Face
N95s today were not designed to be reused, but too often today people are forced to do just that at risk for their health and comfort. Then, after a respirator is used past its intended life, it must be disposed of which is not sustainable. We need a better option.
Current N95 masks cause discomfort and marks on the face. These issues can be exacerbated by long shifts in the hospital especially during times of crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic.
By obscuring the mouth, N95s make communication between providers and able-bodied individuals extremely difficult and can make communication with those with hearing difficulties impossible. We focused on improving audibility and ensuring features for disabled patients.
Respirators on the market at the moment are not breathable which leads to discomfort and even in some cases oxygen deprivation and decrease in job performance. It is essential to improve breathability while still providing superior protection against a variety of particles.
